Throughout this week I have been thinking of the stories that I have been told about through my job and experience in this world. One of those stories that moved me was of a 21 year old girl, that I had interviewed for a paper that I wrote during my sophomore year in college. This woman was physical beaten and mental tortured by her father for most of her life. When beginning this project I had never thought of the things that I would be told and how it would touch me, but listening to the girl telling me how her father would beat her to the point that her legs and back would go numb or tell her she was the ugliest individual he had ever seen. This woman had been through so much and for the first time she was allowed to pour her heart and soul out. With our interview she told me it had been the first time she had been able to tell her story and while the hatred for her father still was prominent she felt that this had let her heal. While I was unable to complete the task throughout this week of listening or aiding some other individual because of my workload. I felt that it allowed me to think of all the people I have met and had been able to help by sitting there listening.

This is all I could think of

This is all I could think of

Really?

This film intrigued my mind as I was looking at individuals caged behind bars portraying the characters in Shakespearean play. For the inmates the play meant more than what the scripts words said, it allowed them to free themselves from the shackles of society’s burden and repent from their ills. They learned to resolve their issues through understanding that society had not placed them in these shackles but they had placed themselves behind bars for their actions. While I like the way the director portrayed the individuals behind bars, I became less attached to the people in shackles and horrified by their crimes. This single scene removed me from seeing these individuals as people trying to repent and individuals that belonged behind bars for the actions that they had committed. Although, I understand writing is something that brings us together and should help to heal the world around us, I feel that individuals that committed crimes against society should be left behind bars to repent for what they have done, not be allowed to escape their world of captivity to play some character in play.

Here watch the play

Here watch the play

Before I say “I Do”

“Adam, do you take Eve to be your wedded wife to live together in marriage. Do you promise to love, comfort, honor and keep her For better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. And forsaking all others, be faithful only to her so long as you both shall live?”

In this society, marriage was thought of as a life commitment and displayed a lot of principles that are essential to Christian values. Premarital sex was seen as a sin and resulted in a couple being forbidden from marriage. This is attributed to the utopian believe that a man wouldn’t marry the woman if he had sex with her and it would devalue the concept of marriage. However ,”you can’t buy a car without test driving it first,” so prior to any marriage, the bride and groom are, shown to each other naked, so that neither is surprised by what they find come wedding day. Yet, marriage is something that is supposed to be forever and looking at couples who abstained from having premarital sex, you can see that the average length of their marriage did not satisfy this goal. Sexual satisfaction is important in a good relationship and allows for a couple to grow closer. Individuals that choose to abstain from premarital sex tend to have no understanding of their partners sexual needs or wants and are not as close as individuals that did have premarital sex. While the utopian individuals got to see each other naked prior to their marriage that provided them with no understanding of what truly made each other sexual happy. Although, marriage also revolves around a relationship outside of sex and the mental connection of both partners should be made prior to engaging in intercourse. Before, taking the leap an individual should think about what makes each other happy sexually and mentally then they can finally say

I DO!

literaturesmistress:

So this is a building in Norwich that has the text of More’s Utopia painted on it. This is awesome and i hope everyone looks at this!

To me, the fact that someone painted this specific text on a building is ironic. Being that graffiti is so frowned upon (although some view it as an art form), it shows that the world is not perfect and people commit crimes and paint on private property all the time. In More’s Amaurot we would never find anyone rebelling and painting on a building.

Today we are going to study Adam and Eve.” This poem looks like Milton, couldn’t write anything and decide to restate the story of Adam and Eve or he went to Sunday school and his real poem got messed up with that days lesson.

The reader is greeted with the main theme in the opening of Paradise Lost because Milton formal states this poem is about mankind’s first act of disobedience toward God, and the consequences that followed from it. This told me that when I read this all I will have to do is read this sentence then jump to the very end and read his version of the consequences. {I just saved myself an hour of reading, but since I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought he would change the story I read the whole thing….My mistake.} This poem reads like a shorten bible with words that are simplified. Milton discusses the original sin, how it leads to us to losing our home in paradise and how Jesus comes to restore humankind to its former position of purity. Milton then decides he wants to try and invoke the Holy Spirit {this reminded me of those television shows where the priest smacks the people in the head and these people act like they are fixed} and asks for it to fill him with the knowledge of the beginning of the world. Milton believes that by having this knowledge he will be able to show his others that the fall of mankind into sin and death was part of God’s greater plan, and that God’s plan is justified.{If this was Gods ultimate plan, did he know he was going to kill his own son and is that not against his rules?} The story then goes on to explain Satan’s downfall. Personally, I think I could have saved Milton the issue of writing this by telling him when he thought of writing this that it had already been done. {Since Milton is paraphrasing doesn’t he need a reference and citation?}

Photo

Photo

No means No/ The Day After

The Flea

The poem begins with the poet asking his beloved to look at the flea that is in front of them. The flea has sucked his blood and hers and now inside the flea they are mingled together. He then goes on to tell her that it cannot be called “sin, or shame, or loss of maidenhead” because the flea has joined them together in a way that, “alas, is more than we would do.” I don’t know if this is just how I think but I couldn’t help think of the guy trying to figure out how to get in this girl’s pants. How sad do you have to be to compare you and your partner to a flea because she won’t allow you in? I’m sorry, but if he truly loved her he would wait and stop pressuring her every minute of the day. This poem was funny, but it was really stupid because it showed this guy as a sex deprived horn dog. I think he could have done a lot better because he didn’t even get the girl to give in.

The Rising Sun

This poem I feel is the next process after the girl finally accepts to have sex with the poet. Now the sun is starting to rise and he keeps questioning why the sun has to rise and destroy this moment. Then he goes on to say that the sun hasn’t seen anyone better and she is the most beautiful. He kind of pleads with the sun to stop bothering him because he doesn’t want this moment to end. This kind of reminded me of the person who knows it is a onetime thing and they try to get it to last longer than that, so they do anything possibly to insure it last forever.

I don’t know but reading his poems reminded me of a high school teenager who is just trying to get laid and finally does, but realizes it won’t last forever and tries to make it last.

In sonnet 138 the main character is reminded that the...

In sonnet 138 the main character is reminded that the progression of time results in the progression towards death.

Shakespeare’s sonnets show the progression of time as...

Shakespeare’s sonnets show the progression of time as nemesis to the main character.
